The Good Fight

about

The original demo of "The Good Fight" was completed on 1st March 2012 in the bedroom of the house where I grew up.

The song came into life at 11:50am on 8th February 2012 - 6 days before my birthday (yay!) and 425 years after Mary, Queen of Scots was beheaded (not yay).

"The Good Fight" was the 3rd song in an album that came to be called "IN NOMINE PATRIS" - a concept piece set during the First Crusade. At least one of you is saying,

"But why is the Templar Flag on the cover? The Knights Templar weren't founded until the 14th Century!"

The reason for this egregious error is simple - I am an enormous fan of the Assassin's Creed video game series, where the Templar Order are framed as the villains of the piece. Even though the first instalment of the series is set during the Third Crusade in the late 12th century, I now forever associate the Knights Templar with that period in history - albeit incorrectly!

The AC franchise sparked the inspiration for "Hashashiyyin," which in turn lead to the idea for this song and the accompanying album. "What if I wrote a song from the opposite point of view?"

Not those fighting to defend their homeland, but those riding thousands of miles to liberate the Holy Land from a tyrranical heathen (so they thought).

The story of "The Good Fight" asks the question - what if those who marched to 'free' the Holy Land did so under false pretences? For their own gain, to line their pockets, or even to slake their thirst for
blood and violence. These are the characters you will meet on your march to the Holy Land in this excursion.

The version of "The Good Fight" that you hear today has undergone some enhancements. The original rhythm & lead guitar, bass guitar & keyboard tracks remain and have been augmented with additional guitar and keyboard layers.

The drums, guitar solo and vocals have been fully "reimagined"
and the opening acoustic guitar solo didn't appear on the original demo. It's a bit of a nod to ASIA's "Aqua" album, which celebrates it's 30th birthday this year and is one of my all-time favourites.

Thank you for continuing to support the band and this series, we really hope that you enjoyed this glimpse at the "lost HeKz album." There's plenty more where that came from if you did!

lyrics

First I thought that only those whose
faith was pure would heed the call
As I look around me I can
see that's not the case at all

Heroes, Villains
Marching together towards the Good Fight
Kings and Sinners
Under one sacred banner unite

Each of these men's trespasses
Exceed even my own internal
Doubt they fight for righteousness
For such bloodlust will reign eternal

Heroes, Villains
Marching together towards the Good Fight
Kings and Sinners
Under one sacred banner unite

Are these men the champions we seek
An army of liars and cheats
Of warlords whose blades are in heat and
who by the promise of treasure themselves are enticed?

And what of the rest of the horde -
Too young or too old, they won't last the walk
The birds pick them out as the weak ones they'll stalk
Those unseasoned wretches who can't hold a sword

Come Heaven or Hell, they don't have a hope
