Winged Heels

about

The original idea for "Winged Heels" was recorded on Christmas Day 2014, and the fully-fleshed out demo completed mid-April of the following year.

This is the kind of song that I've always enjoyed writing - combining a hard rock intensity reminiscent of Deep Purple with a progressive flair very much inspired by Rush and capped off with a strong melodic hook. HeKz has never been about writing to a set formula, but this kind of template is one that has cropped up in the band's music time and time again. "Seize The Day"
,
"Disconnect the World" and "Trecena" all fit this brief, though I would argue that each of those songs very much has it's own identity.

"Winged Heels" was to be part of my original concept for our 3rd album "INVICTA." The original working title for that album was "OMNINO" (yes, another Latin one!) and I was piecing together an original story about a prodigal son-esque character, which was ultimately not pursued.

Unlike the other songs in this series that you have heard, and are yet to hear, this particular number did make it into the rehearsal room. I recall that the rapidly changing time signatures proved to be a bit too complex for some members of the band, so "Winged Heels" was swiftly ejected after a few failed attempts at playing the energetic opening riff.

(It's a shame that the song never made it further than this, as I believe that it could have become quite a formidable song in the live set if everyone had persevered!)

The version of the song that you hear today is largely unchanged from the original demo. I wasn't happy with the thin bass tone on the original demo so that has been completely re-recorded; and the original Hammond [MIDI] performance has been recaptured through my trusty B4000+ organ
emulator and the outrageously good-sounding mini-Vent II rotary cab simulator. Other than that, I did a little bit of volume automation and tweaked the effects to make the mix pop a bit and once more turned my hand to mastering.

Still incredibly difficult, but practice makes perfect right?

lyrics

I've always run away from the things I couldn't face
Perhaps I could confront them in another time, another place
Until I get there, I'll just keep on keeping up the pace
Maybe I can't outrun them, but I can run the race

Send them a message
Everything you've heard is real
Learn from this lesson

Don't count your blessings
Before your final meal
Maybe you'll see me

It's not suspended falling, I ain't going down
Without a fight you might just fade without a sound
It's not a game of thrones but I still take the crown
it's not my curtain call but I'll still take a bow

Send them a message
Everything you've heard is real
Learn from this lesson

Don't count your blessings
Before your final meal
Maybe you'll see me

I'm runnin' out on winged heels
